This large platter can be used for the turkey for Thanksgiving dinner, filled with appetizers for a dinner party or a spread of sliced fruit for a weekend brunch. When it’s not being used for food, use it on your coffee table to hold your magazines or your remote controls.
The Fossil Maple Leaf Platter is made from a stoneware slab, with real leaves and slip, then coils for the rim, oxides and glazes. The bottom is impressed with my Grandmother’s lace. Food and Dishwasher Safe.

White stoneware is a type of clay that fires at a very high temperature and will remain lighter than regular stoneware. My glazes are hand mixed to complement each other and many pieces have over 6 glazes working together. I fire to Cone (^) 9 in a large gas reduction kiln, which gets to 2350 degrees F. This type of firing is not computerized and I use my eyes, ears and nose to adjust temperature. I watch the flame to make sure it’s the right color and listen to the roar it makes. There should always be a slight odor of gas. It takes about 40 hours firing from start to finish.
This type of high firing makes the perfect piece for everyday usage in the kitchen or as tableware.
