Possibly the most popular subject for a Philippine santos. This Mother Mary is a fine example of an earlier, home altar piece. The style is known as “bell shaped” (this being a modified, tamer version) and this likely comes from the southern part of the islands. General: 10.75″ in height. Carved in heavy wood, probably molave, with polychrome. Philippines. Condition: Traces of polychrome remain on the back. Early, large crack travels from the bottom of the figure to the neck. The two demi-lunes that once protruded from the “globe” upon which she stands are missing. Hands are missing. Comments: While the crack detracts, there are some very admirable qualities here. The wood is quite beautiful, the face especially is serene and well done, the hair is long with the strands finely done. Additional: Additional Information: Mother Mary is shown standing on a snake. This refers to Genesis 3:15, where it says: “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” In essence, Mary has escaped original sin. The crescent moon halves (note: now missing) indicate the waning moon, symbolizing the Old Testament and synagoga are the foundations of the Church. Whatever the culture, there can be no more important art than that used as an aid for communicating with the divine. I have always found devotional artifacts fascinating to collect; there is no better way to connect with a past culture than through the objects that were important to it. Collecting santos figures is particularly gratifying. The subject, the style and the methods of production combine to tell the tale of what the individuals in that culture valued. ____________ I have been collecting artifacts and religious objects for many years, specializing in Asian and European vintage carvings. Don’t hesitate to ask about other stock that I might have that is not listed here. Website: http://sirraffles.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SirRafflesArt
