Getting married? Well, first of all, we wish you much happiness and joy as you walk through life with your partner!

We have so few rituals left in our busy, modern lives….  But, wedding celebrations live on! The big day cements promises made both between the couple and their community. A day that will not be forgotten, a passageway for many into adulthood and partnership.

I’ve been in many weddings. Bridesmaid several times and Best Man twice (!!!). Yep, I’m a girl, but I have friends who dare to break the rules, who shape their rituals so that they reflect who they are and what they believe in. A wedding is a perfect opportunity to escape big business and to hold up alternatives that show off your personality and your own sense of design. You can be beautiful and creative while surrounding yourself with meaning. When you bring the handmade touch into the equation, you know that nobody else will have a wedding like yours!

Jannelle Olmstead of Something Else Studio made these gorgeous gowns. You can see the outfits she made for her son and daughter-in-law on our Something Else Studio Feature. The bride does not always have to wear white! Jannelle didn’t! Here she is with her husband, Joe Guarnere, in 1995:

What a shirt, eh?

A couple of my best friends got married on an island in Venezuela and it’s an event I will never forget. It was so beautiful, so simple, and so alive! We camped in tents and the day after they got married, we spent the day collecting plastic trash that had washed up on one side of the island. Both Tom and Neddy work towards greening the planet, so their marriage was a testament to that and now, so many years later, those vows, hopes and dreams continue to ring true.

There are many ways in which you can personalize your wedding: the clothes you wear, the decorations used, gifts for your bridesmaids and groomsmen, cake toppers, and so on. I still have some little ceramic fish from a friend’s wedding that held the seating cards for the guests at the reception. So cute!

Here are some ideas from our Artizan Shops. Clicking on the images will take you to their shops.
