Rayela Art Recycled Dog Food Bags – King Tut Hat
Rayela Art Recycled Dog Food hat, bag and cuff- The King Tut Hat can be worn with the openings at the front or sides. Freshwater pearls and tassel. The bag has a magnetic closure and the cuff has ostrich eggshell discs sewn on.
The King Tut hat, cuff and Sweet Pea bag were made from hundreds of folded pieces of paper, the outer layer of dog food bags. The pieces are interlocked together and then sewn together with either fake gut or dental floss. This is known as the candy wrapper technique as some wrappers are the perfect size for folding. I am the only person I have seen who adds beads to the surface like this.
I like assembling small bits into larger surfaces and especially feel good when I can recycle something that would certainly have ended up in a landfill. The dog food bags that I used had three layers: the inside one that came into contact with the food (I throw that away), a brown paper that I use for shipping or to make patterns and the outer layer, used in projects like the ones you see here. There is a protective coating on the paper, but care is needed when using any of these pieces as they are fragile.
The King Tut hat can be worn with the openings to the front and back or to the sides. The model in the second photo pulled her hair through the openings, a fun effect!
