Needle Felted Caterpillar and Mushroom (from Alice in Wonderland)

$175.00

This large scale sculpture of the caterpillar sitting is a one of a kind piece of art suitable for classroom settings, libraries and Alice in Wonderland themed parties and exhibits. This piece was featured in Felt Magazine.

Caterpillar 16.5″ long x 6.5″ diameter/42cm long x 17 dia.
Mushroom Cap 17″ dia.x 2″ tall/43cm dia. X 5 cm tall, Mushroom Stem 21″ tall x 24″ dia. (widest point)x 13″ dia. (smallest point) 53cm tall x 61cm dia. (widest point) x 33cm dia. (smallest point)

Lewis Carroll’s classic story Alice in Wonderland and the original illustrations by John Tenniel provide endless magical possibilities in terms of creating our own whimsical characters. For me, the caterpillar smoking a hookah on top of a mushroom has become a serious fellow, an insect sage contemplating the world and it’s possible realities. The mushroom and caterpillar are needle felted from wool, the hookah is felted then embroidered.

I love the medium of wool for needle felted sculpture; you can achieve very fine details by needle felting and you can mix the wool with embroidery, sewing, beading etc. which makes it very visually interesting. Needle felting is meshing raw wool together with a specially barbed needle by repeatedly stabbing the wool with the needle. The wool binds together to create very strong forms. The donkey is needle felted from wool, he has polymer clay teeth and hooves.

Each piece is a handmade piece of art; each animal takes 10-15 hours minimally to create; the price of each piece reflects the skill, artistry and time it takes to make each artwork. The price also includes the price of shipping to the U.S.A. (shipping to other countries may cost additionally). I adore animals and I hope to educate and bring attention to particular animal causes (animal rescue and fundraising).

These sculptures are not toys.

To protect and keep your needle felted sculpture looking its best I recommend placing the sculpture under a glass or plexiglass covering. A covering will protect the wool from dust and prevent admirers from touching the sculpture which will eventually make the wool become slightly fuzzy.

Laura Lee Burch

Welcome to my shop! Here you can find needle felted dolls, puppets, costume accessories and needle felted pet portraits. I create most of my pieces through the fascinating technique of needle felting, a dry felting technique using specialized needles. By stabbing raw wool with felting needles, the wool fibers mesh together creating a very firm and detailed piece. I'm from Greenfield, Indiana; I'm currently living in Jaffa, Israel. My three girls and my animals have inspired nearly everything I make. I've been making art my whole life; it's my passion:)I needle felt dog and animal sculptures and take order requests. My needle felted sculptures are usually around 6" tall x 7" long, they are dry felted from wool, they take a minimum of 10-15 hours to sculpt (depending on the animal's size and type of fur.) These miniature sculptures are not toys.I offer free felting tutorials on my blog: http://www.lauraleeburch.com/blog/ and a few more advanced tutorials for sale on my Etsy site> Visit me here: instagram: http://bit.ly/1sVokWr Facebook Studio: http://www.facebook.com/lauraleeburch.studio Tumblr: https://www.tumblr.com/blog/lauraburch website: https://www.lauraleeburch.com
