MayaMam Weaver

We are a group of Maya Mam women from the town of Cajolá in Guatemala. For us Maya, weaving has been a way for thousands of years to express our identity, our love of beauty and to relay the wisdom of our ancestors. Our ancestors left an extraordinary legacy to us and to all of humanity — a vision of the universe that allows us to know our place in that universe and that guides our lives in harmony with every other person’s purpose in life so that we all develop to our full potential.

Our group began when several of us came together to talk about common problems. We identified lack of income as our major need, and began to learn to weave (on a foot loom – many of us are accustomed to weaving on the backstrap loom) and to sew with the goal of creating products inspired by our own textiles but to sell in the United States. We also want to continue the ancient tradition of weaving our ancient wisdom into our textiles, but now to share with the people of North America. And thus was born MayaMam.

We Mam are one of the oldest peoples of Mesoamerica, and we still speak our own language. Cajolá was founded more than 500 years ago. Her name means “son of water” because of her rivers. Cajolá is very traditional, with a primarily agricultural economy – and unfortunately, a high level of poverty.

Signature Celebration Collection

Handwoven Runners and Placemats, Coasters and Napkins

Dress your table in style…or enjoy a tiny burst of color in the coasters. We weave these table runners, placemats, basket liners, and coasters on our backstrap looms in the vibrant colors that we are surrounded with all our lives. The embroidery motifs come from our collective memories, from our observations of our daily life, and from nature.

Each of the table runners, placemat sets, and basket liners is unique. If you would like matching sets, or have special colors in mind, let us know, it is easy for us to do custom work.
