MayaMam Weavers Guatemalan Handwoven Wraps and Shawls
The MayaMam Weavers handwoven shawls and wraps are woven in two complementary colors, making them versatile as each side looks different. Elegant and comfortable, they are perfect for chilly outings or relaxing at home. Scarves and shawls also look great on tables, beds and walls, so get creative!
We are a group of Maya Mam women from the town of Cajolá in Guatemala. For us Maya, weaving has been a way for thousands of years to express our identity, our love of beauty and to relay the wisdom of our ancestors. Our ancestors left an extraordinary legacy to us and to all of humanity — a vision of the universe that allows us to know our place in that universe and that guides our lives in harmony with every other person’s purpose in life so that we all develop to our full potential.
Our group began when several of us came together to talk about common problems. We identified lack of income as our major need, and began to learn to weave (on a foot loom – many of us are accustomed to weaving on the backstrap loom) and to sew with the goal of creating products inspired by our own textiles but to sell in the United States. We also want to continue the ancient tradition of weaving our ancient wisdom into our textiles, but now to share with the people of North America. And thus was born MayaMam.
We Mam are one of the oldest peoples of Mesoamerica, and we still speak our own language. Cajolá was founded more than 500 years ago. Her name means “son of water” because of her rivers. Cajolá is very traditional, with a primarily agricultural economy – and unfortunately, a high level of poverty.
Guatemalan Handwoven Wraps and Shawls
Handwoven in three different weaves: “Delfina,” Herringbone, and “ochos”.
Soft, medium weight and reversible, with hand knotted fringe.
Our handwoven shawls are popular for a light covering in spring or fall — or your air conditioned office or restaurant! Some women wear them as a scarf, though they are a bit bulky for that.
The shawl has been hand loomed in 100% cotton. Reversible, each side is surprisingly different — you can wear it on either side, or drape it to show off both sides at the same time!
Approximately 66 inches long by 27 inches wide, it has a 2 1/2 inch double-knotted fringe at each end. 168 cm x 68.50
Machine washable with like colors on cold, gentle cycle; tumble dry — but untangling the fringe requires patience!
