Mayamam Weavers

We are a group of Maya Mam women from the town of Cajolá in Guatemala. For us Maya, weaving has been a way for thousands of years to express our identity, our love of beauty and to relay the wisdom of our ancestors. Our ancestors left an extraordinary legacy to us and to all of humanity — a vision of the universe that allows us to know our place in that universe and that guides our lives in harmony with every other person’s purpose in life so that we all develop to our full potential.

Our group began when several of us came together to talk about common problems. We identified lack of income as our major need, and began to learn to weave (on a foot loom – many of us are accustomed to weaving on the backstrap loom) and to sew with the goal of creating products inspired by our own textiles but to sell in the United States. We also want to continue the ancient tradition of weaving our ancient wisdom into our textiles, but now to share with the people of North America. And thus was born MayaMam.

We Mam are one of the oldest peoples of Mesoamerica, and we still speak our own language. Cajolá was founded more than 500 years ago. Her name means “son of water” because of her rivers. Cajolá is very traditional, with a primarily agricultural economy – and unfortunately, a high level of poverty.

Guatemalan Handwoven Embroidered Belts

Brightly embroidered handwoven belts are the perfect accessory for your jeans, or to belt a tunic.

We have embroidered them on our traditional backstrap looms of 100% cotton incorporating motifs drawn from our collective memory and daily life.

The black belts have a black horn buckle, the white belts can come with either black horn or a wooden buckle, and the remaining colors have been closed with a wooden buckle. We can change the belt buckles between black horn and wood, just use the contact form. The belts are measured from the middle of the buckle to the end and are sold in 35″, 39″, 43″ and 47″ lengths. Ask about custom lengths!
