SOMEONE GET ME OUT OF HERE!

This may be my favorite vintage photo of all time – and one of my favorite pieces.

This poor little schoolgirl waiting for the bell to ring looks as mournful a century ago as an office worker today counting the hours until 5PM.  I love how relatable her expression is.

After manipulating the photo for clarity, I transferred it onto fabric and sewed it onto an antique doily. (I also put a scrim of open weave linen behind the doily for additional depth and texture.)

I created a sweater, made from a hundred French embroidery knots, embroidered her hair, and gave her 3-dimensional shoelaces from merino yarn. I like to mix 2- and 3-dimensional elements, playing with foreground/background and reality/fantasy.

This hoop measures 9.25″ round,

Let this spunky little girl keep you company when you’re watching the clock. The piece is lightweight enough to hang on a pushpin, but also looks great displayed on a desk or shelf.

I want to make you smile!

All my work is infused with color and a bit of whimsy.

These days, I’m charmed by vintage photos. Don’t most people look grim in antique portraits? That’s because they needed to sit still for the camera. But I’ve collected rare images of people having a great time. Across all these years, they can still make us smile.

You’ll see that spirit in my hoop art, which combines photo transfer with embroidery, beading and touches of antique lace.

My colorful felt pieces are all hand felted and hand dyed. They are truly a labor of love! I have to create my own fabric from raw wool – and then dye it several times – before I can even begin a design. (Whose idea was this?)

I also make custom pieces. Want one of your own photos transformed into a one-of-a-kind work of art? Commission me to create personalized wedding, engagement, anniversary, or birthday gifts. Or browse through my existing pieces and find one that speaks to you. Let’s talk!

Enjoy!

P.S. For those of you who have asked, the answer is yes – Sunshine is my real name. I was born with it.

Amy Sunshine Designs

I am a fiber artist who has studied across the U.S. It is my deepest hope that my art will make you smile. In this world of technology and isolation, we forget that we are really all connected - across continents, and across time. I love finding vintage images of people from the past who have something to teach us today. And I love finding whimsy and joy wherever it may arise. My works draw on images from many eras of people having FUN. The materials have been gathered from across the world, with an emphasis on highest quality. Hand-made materials beat machine-made every time. I like to incorporate found objects into my work, and I especially like to play with the juxtaposition of reality and fantasy. For example, many of my hoop photos are embroidered in the background and realistic in the foreground - or vice versa. My felted pieces are very different from my hoops, and you won't see anything else like them on the web. Maybe this is because they are so labor-intensive: before I can begin to create a piece, I first have to create the felt from raw wool, and then dye it several times to make patterns. The felt collages are embellished with embroidery, knitting, and sometimes even rug hooking! Please browse around and let me know if anything strikes your fancy! Warm regards, Amy
