This elegant hand-woven ikat fabric, in a lovely blue and gold pattern, is made by the award-winning Craft Development Center of Uzbekistan. This hand-dyed fabric, woven of 60% silk and 40% cotton, was hand-woven on a special purpose loom to produce the wider than usual 24″ fabric. Dyed with pure eco-dyes (indigo and onion peel), this unique fabric is just the thing for the fashion designer looking to create a one-of-a-kind piece. Priced by the yard, only 5 yards of this sumptuous fabric are available.
The artists of the Crafts Development Center, headed by fifth generation master weaver Rasuljon Mirzaahmedov, use silk and cotton, all produced in Uzbekistan, to make ikat fabrics, pillows and other home décor items, clothing, bags and other accessories. Ikat weaving is a very time-consuming and complex process: raw silk goes through 37 steps, including many dyeings, to complete a single piece. “Our hands touch up to 4,000 strands of silk during the process,” Rasuljon says. Traditionally, men warp and dye the silk, and women complete the weaving.
