Fairly Worn Upcycled Kantha Bag
Upcycled boho kantha bags by textile artist, Valerie Ley Alter of Fairly Worn. Each bag is one-of-a-kind, with many sizes and variations.
Kantha quilts consist of several layers of recycled cotton or silk saris. they are held together by a simple, running, “kantha” stitch that is applied row after row and gives the fabric its unique, slightly wrinkled look. This kind of embroidery is most popular with the rural women of Bangladesh and West Bengal in India, who spend hour upon hour creating these wonderful textile pieces, each one-of-a-kind. Kantha quilts are decorative as well as useful – as day blankets, bed covers, curtains, wall hangings – or for sewing!
Fairly Worn has made these into wonderful kantha bags. Age and wear makes them soft and comfortable. Each bag has been lovingly accessorized with handles and hardware as appropriate, along with decorative embellishments. Prices range between $53-$125, depending on size and work involved. Each boho kantha bag has been handmade and personalized, first by a village woman and then by textile artist, Valerie Ley Alter.
