I start each quilt by selecting a palette of colors and fabrics and proceed intuitively and interactively, adding or removing fabrics and shapes until I’ve achieved a pleasing composition. I stitch these fabrics together, further modifying the design as I proceed. I add batting and machine quilt my work on a domestic home sewing machine using a wide range of thread colors to add texture, reinforce the composition, and provide an additional layer of interest. I generally use trilobal polyester thread, which has a sheen like that of rayon but is more lightfast. I hope viewers can enjoy the work as a whole from a distance and discover new delights when they come closer.
My mother taught me to sew. She made clothes that were always a bit different, a bit more interesting than the published pattern. I’ve taken her approach in my art, always experimenting, never drawing inside the lines. I was first exposed to art quilts in 1986, when I learned that quilts need not be for beds, that the colors and designs could be whatever you wanted. My formal education was in Political Science and Library Science and I worked in those fields for many years while I made art quilts in my free time. I have been a full-time studio artist since 2001. I learned to dye about that time, opening new avenues of experimentation and expression.
My work is sold at the Potomac Fiber Arts Gallery in the Torpedo Factory, Alexandria, VA, USA, and through my website and has been exhibited in local and regional shows in the Washington, DC (USA) area. I am a Juried Artist Member of Studio Art Quilt Associates. Many of my quilts are in private collections.

I have made art quilts and other textile art since 1986. My work is abstract, but often suggests architecture, influenced by my childhood in New York City and by my travels. I love color, visual texture, and spatial ambiguity.
