Surrounding a child with handmade products from an early age helps them make sense of the world, especially if they also learn how to stitch, paste, cut, weave and assemble. So many of the toys and products children interact with have no real connection with nature or self-sufficiency, so parents and adults with children in their lives need to make that extra effort. Electronics definitely have their place, but they should not be a child’s whole world!
Plus, the handmade touch brings in a unique look that cannot be copied by any chain store! If you are a creative person, you will appreciate the handmade gifts for children we can show you from our Artizan Made shops!
First there is the child’s room. From infancy, colors, mobiles, art on the walls, and soft textiles inform and shape the child’s senses. You can paint the walls with scenes, add chalkboard areas so they can express themselves, have colorful and movable shapes floating from the ceiling and have art that they can see, but not touch. We have many wonderful textiles and objects that would look great in a kid’s room: textiles, quilts, pillows, and much more! Look through our past features to find more ideas.
For the tribal look, Afghan Tribal Arts has vintage garments that were actually worn by other kids a long time ago. Incorporating ethnographic or vintage items exposes your child to the world and to history. Vests and clothing look great mounted as shelf art:
Redhardwick‘s mixed media bring in great colors and a sense of humor! I think her robots would be a great favorite in a boy’s room. Is that sexist? Of course, girls would love them, too! 🙂
My brother and his wife bought a bunch of the toys they used to own as kids on eBay. They were lucky to find their favorite dolls and cars in pristine condition (and paid a pretty penny for them!). With one of a kind toys, once their hair and eyes have been pulled out, you can repair them, but you’ll never find another one just like it. Our Russian shop, wassupbrothers, is loaded with plush animals just waiting for all that love! Great horned owls, bunny rabbits and other softies that can cuddle and become a favorite companion.
Dressing up a little kid in handmade clothes is so much fun! I’ve given lots of little ethnic outfits at baby showers over the years and they have always been a hit! Siamese Dream Design has a separate arm to their business in Thailand just for girls and boys called Dek Doi. Aside from being durable, the designs are really cute. They have clothing, shoes and backpacks for kids.
Soft and cuddly, any of the wraps featured in Wrapture by Inese‘s shop can be used by kids. Just wrap them around twice or let them drape low! If you want a specific size, contact her about doing a special commission for you.
There are many other wonderful handmade things in our Artizan Made shops that we could point you to, but hopefully this will give you some ideas to start out with. Our Shop page has links to our Artizan Made shops along with a link to our Etsy shops. Click on the kids tag when you are there to see which shops pop up and then click on those thumbnails to learn more about them. We are an international collective of handmade shops. More products are shown below which link directly to shop listings. Click on them to visit, but be aware that the prices shown are not necessarily in US dollars. They are listed in the original currency.
