“No more art!” My mother once told me when I asked her what she wanted for Christmas. It wasn’t that she didn’t like art. She just felt like she was running out of wall space, which she was. I’ve given my mother lots of beautiful handmade gifts over the years, sticking to functional things which she has used: tablecloths, pillows, placemats, mugs, scarves, socks, gloves, rugs, jewelry boxes and games. (We love to play board and card games as a family.) She is not big on jewelry, but if she had been, I would have given her more of that, too. Some things I made and others I bought. I have been fortunate to have a mother whom I can also count as a friend. We are very different from each other, but the basic skills that I have that allow me to navigate in the world came from her. The artist-dreamer side can be blamed on my father. 🙂

Mother’s Day allows us to say thank you in a small way to that woman who worked so hard to raise us or who is currently toiling away at bringing up children. It’s hard work! Of course, this has also become big business and all of the box stores are out there, too, hoping that you will shop with them. Consider giving the mother in your life something handmade this year. I asked our Artizan shops for suggestions and here are some great one-of-a-kind gifts that have been made with love and care. Click on the images to visit the listing:

Aren’t these fun? Think about all the time and effort that goes into each thing: sourcing materials, planning the design, making it, photographing…. So much more meaningful than something made in a factory…
